Founders College was built and opened in 1965. It is one of York University's oldest schools and has a rich history of many significant rooms, societies and groups. The college was named in January of the same year in honour of the original twelve founders of the building. The emblem, which bases the twelve around an embryo design, is also designed in respect to these people. This college was a part of the "Founders Fund" which was a public fundraising movement that would help develop York University for future services.
Founders opened with John J. Conway as Master of the College and John Priestly as the Senior Tutor. The college expanded the following year, adding a Senior Common Room and later expanding to a Junior Common Room and adding a bar, a games room, study places and more.
An important aspect to the history of Founders comes from the Handbooks. From 1965 through 1988, Founders College distributed these handbooks to its students in preparation for the university year. These handbooks give a presumption of what life is like and what is available at Founders. In addition it shows the orientation schedule with a large variety of social events designed to get the community together and active for the beginning of classes.
