Samuel J. Zacks Gallery:
The Samuel J. Zacks Art Gallery was established in 1972 and is a unique and historic feature to the college. The gallery offers a multitude of perspectives and focuses on presenting art that is accessible to the entire community.[1]
The Samuel J. Zacks gallery was established by the Wife of Samuel Zacks Ayala Zacks-Abarmov after his passing. This was arranged under a series of discourse with the University and Master Virginia Rock the first master of Stong. As well as the gallery being named after her late husband Ayala established a trust in her husband’s name at York,[2]which is responsible for the Samuel Zacks Scholarship awarded to students affiliated with the college.[3]Both Samuel and Ayala were prominent art collectors, their collection now comprises a large portion of the European art collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Ayala and Sam Zacks were married in 1947 and shortly after began collecting art from around Paris, Canada and Israel. By 1950 they had accumulated an extensive art collection which was regularly showcased at institutions around the world.[4]The site zacksgallery.ca maintains information pertaining to the operating hours and information of the gallery itself. They house a small archive of photos of past exhibitions which took place at the Sam Zacks Gallery which can be viewed here: http://www.zacksgallery.ca/past.html
The Zacks Gallery has had many directors and co-directors over the years. The role of the director at the Zacks Gallery is to provide ambiance to the exhibits at the gallery either through writing, personal contact with interested viewers or with participation with the galleries staff. It is the personal mission of each director to make sure that the exhibit is displayed so that it is accessible to both the York University community and the greater Toronto community.
